Durant ces jours de trêve de Noël, l'atelier était bien trop glacial pour que je réussisse à le chauffer. Je suis donc restée entre cuisine et ... cuisine ! Ce qui m'a donné tout le temps de fureter sur mon ordinateur. Et de découvrir une sorte de mode, si on peut dire, qui "sévit" depuis quelques années parmi de nombreux artistes. On l'appelle PAD - de l'anglais "a Painting A Day" - une peinture par jour. Le peintre dont je vous montrais le travail l'autre jour semble en avoir été le précurseur. Sur un blog exprès pour ça, il présente chaque jour un petit format. Et il a été suivi de nombreux autres peintres qui font de même. Il y a aussi des sites qui regroupent les travaux quotidiens des artistes. C'est intéressant comme démarche, je trouve.

C'est aussi une forme d'engagement qu'on prend avec soi-même et qui force à une certaine discipline. Il n'est pas évident de trouver du temps CHAQUE JOUR pour faire une peinture, mais il faut tâcher de faire de son mieux. Peinture, dessin, ou toute autre techniques picturale d'ailleurs. Et trouver le temps de faire les peintures "normales" à côté ! Ce qui, je l'avoue, est un vrai challenge pour moi qui suis atteinte de flémingite aigüe teintée de procrastination chronique !

Mais avant de m'engager sérieusement, je voudrais me laisser quelques temps pour décider si c'est quelque chose qui me convient. Pour en avoir le coeur net, rien ne vaut la pratique. C'est pourquoi j'ai ouvert un petit blog là, juste à côté: c'est Gammes chromatiques. Une aventure intéressante commence peut-être, qui sait ! Si ça vous intéresse, allez y faire un tour et donnez-moi votre avis. Soyez tolérants avec moi, c'est encore un bébé qui fait ses premiers pas. Je vais tâcher de mettre quelques liens vers des blogs d'artistes qui font la même chose.

Je vous montre la petite dernière. Peinte avec émotion - et il me semble que ça se sent ! Je pensais très fort à mon papa, mort dans la neige et la forêt un 25 décembre. Je voulais ma forêt sombre, mais avec de la belle lumière en avant.

Sinon, j'ai mis au carré la planchette qui recevra le pendant d'un autre cygne. Je vais me lancer dans la tentative de lui faire un double... mais pas tout à fait.

This painting is not yet finished, but it's far enough along that I feel okay about posting it. I had to get to where I at least liked it.
The goal was to create a painting that was excruciatingly beautiful; ridiculously beautiful. Shimmering sky, iridescent feathers, translucent petals. Yup. Ridiculously beautiful. Still work to be done, but it feels close.
Back to the palette and easel.

The above is a quote from Joseph Raffael's website. Yesterday I took a whirlwind trip to NYC to see an exhibition of recent works by Raffael at the Nancy Hoffman Gallery which, after 35 years in Soho, has relocated in Chelsea.

I've loved Raffael's work since I first saw it in 1974 in New Mexico, when I was an undergrad at the University of New Mexico. He came to UNM to speak, and afterwards we were able to meet with him. Not only was his work radiant, but he was as well.

A calmness and almost zen peacefulness radiated from his presence.

It was exhilarating to walk into a space that pulsed with the energy of his art!

It just made me want to get to work.

So I guess I wil!!

I'm not a Luddite, nor am I fond of ludditic kinds of extremism... I do embrace the wonders of new invention, technology, new medicine, our generation, right now. I think it is important to be in touch with where the world is heading and not drown in some romantic vision of what was. That being said, to swing to the other extreme would be a travesty also. I like to think about the genetic and evolutionary imprint that shapes life now. There is a collective subconsciousness to respect. How does this new world we live in merge and integrate with an older ancestral, spiritual, cultural, mythological fabric of humanity?

Pour faire le portrait d'un ange...

Pour faire le portrait d'un ange, il faut... un ange ! J'ai donc cherché parmi les anges peints par les artistes au fil du temps et j'en ai choisi un. J'ai découpé son image et je l'ai épinglée au coin de mon châssis. Comme ça:

Bon, il a le nez jaune et une main moche... à retoucher. Ensuite, il ne restera "plus qu'à" faire son portrait. J'ai commencé à mettre le dessin en place. Il reste encore bien à faire, c'est l'état dans lequel j'ai laissé mon tableau hier soir... et il y a du boulot avant que ça ne ressemble à ce que j'ai en tête. ça me donne l'impression de ces poupées russes qui s'emboîtent les unes dans les autres ! Etrange !

Ce matin, on a eu la surprise de découvrir la neige un peu plus haut, sur le sommet du Géant. Il y avait quelques fumeroles qui montaient des combes. La légende dit que lorsque les combes fument, c'est que le dragon qui y habite se réveille... Pour nous protéger, je l'espère, et non pas pour nous effrayer.

Et , pour celles qui s'inquiètent de notre petite Carla, elle va beaucoup mieux. Très bien, même, je dirais. Le souci, c'est la fragilité de son dos. L'idée de cette menace constante: chaque fois qu'elle saute, court comme une dingue, joue avec Lilah, aide Chéri à rentrer les poules et autres gymnastiques à sa façon, elle risque l'accident. Mieux vaut ne pas trop y penser. Elle n'a que deux ans ! La photo a été prise hier juste avant que je ne mette la soupe du dîner sur la table.

Après, elle a fait la sièste avec Lilah, comme presque tous les jours. Le petit machin noir coincé entre l'armoire et la petite Lilah... ben, c'est Carla !!!

O'Keeffe, Dove, the Clark

It's already been several weeks since our wild ride down the back bone of the Taconic Mountains to Williamstown MA, and the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute to see: Circles of Influence, O'Keeffe and Dove.

It was wonderful to see old friends by O'Keeffe such as
The Lawrence Tree painted in 1929.

When the Wadsworth Atheneum acquired the painting in 1981, O’Keeffe commented that, “The painting was done so it could be hung with any end up.” The painting is presently hung in keeping with the artist’s strong early preference, which she stated on numerous occasions, instructing that the tree should “stand on its head.”

At the Clark they had hung it with the trunk on top. Very fun.
The show addressed the interaction between the two artists. Very interesting to see how their work was correlated and how they respectfully fed off of each other's imagery. Initially O'Keeffe, the younger of the two, responded to Dove's development of abstraction, but as her work rapidly matured Dove's imagery obviously begins to respond to hers.
All very interesting.
